Main Research Interests

(1)     Molecular pathogenesis of areca-quid chewing related oral diseases: oral cancer, oral submucous fibrosis

(2)     Development of novel strategies for the treatment of oral cancer and oral oral submucous fibrosis, including target therapy, gene therapy and new chemotherapeutic agents.

(3)     Roles of periodontal pathogens in the development of atherosclerosis

(4)     Cancer and periodontal stem cells

 

Epidemiological studies have clearly associated areca quid (AQ) chewing and risk of oral cancer and submucous fibrosis in India and Southeast Asian countries. Oral cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in these regions.  Therefore, we have begun a series of studies to understand the effects of AQ constituents on human oral tissues and the molecular mechanisms of AQ-chewing related oral diseases. Furthermore, despite recent advances in surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, the overall 5-year survival rate for patients with late stage oral cancer is among the lowest of the major cancers and has not changed during the past two decades.  As standard treatments have not cured this disease, we have begun a series of studies to develop novel strategies for the treatment of oral cancer.
