Founding of this Department is to cultivate high standard medical technologist.

Establishment and development of the department was closely associated with Department of Laboratory of Medicine, then Department of Clinical Laboratory Diagnosis, National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH). In 1950, Central laboratory of NTUH was established to provide service of Clinical Laboratory Diagnosis. In 1954, Dr. Davison, Dean of Medical School, Duke University, North Carolina, was invited as consultant of College of Medicine, NTU. In two month of visiting, he carefully inspected the teaching and status of clinical laboratory system in Taiwan. In his report he made two important suggestions: one is the complete reform of medical education in Taiwan, the other is suggesting the establishment of School of Medical Technology to cultivate science based, well trained medical technologist.

Dr. Davison was very enthusiastic in promoting the establishing the School of Medical Technology, he invited two American experts in clinical laboratory to joining the planning committee: one is Mrs. Marable, a licensed Medical Technologist, and the other is Dr. Gaub, the consultant from WHO. The program was approved by General Meeting in College of Medicine on November 24th, 1955 and send to President Chien of National Taiwan University for subsequent approvals. The program was sent to Ministry of Education on January 14, 1956 and the Minister granted the permission to establish School of Medical Technology on February 20th in the same year.

In fall of 1956, ten students were enrolled in the School. To encourage students maintain their interest in the field of Medical Technology, Dr. Davison raised a fund of five thousand US dollars from Doris Duke Foundation. The interest generated from this fund provide ‘Duke University fellowship’ specific for students of Medical Technology. This is the first School of Medical Technology in the Asia region.

The master program is established in 1987 offered 2-year program. Program of biotechnology was established in 1996 to emphasize the application of biotechnology in clinical laboratory sciences..

In early days the School was situated jointly with Department of Clinical Laboratory Diagnosis, NTUH with one Chairperson overseeing both departments. In 1991, during renovation of NTUH, Department of Clinical Laboratory Diagnosis was transformed into Department of Laboratory Medicine and moved to new building. Original space was left to the School also each department was appointed its own chairperson.

In 2002, Ph.D. program is established.

In 2005, the school was transformed into Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences and Medical Biotechnology. It was a milestone for a new era for its future development in bio-medical sciences.
